A common pitfall of treating neurovascular diseases with stents is that they are made of metal. This requires patients to remain on blood thinners for prolonged periods of time, even life. This problem could be mitigated if new developments in stents could eliminate the metal. Our lab is has done just that. We are working on developing a new generation stent that is bioabsorbable. This stent will help reduce the need for patients to remain on life-long blood thinners, among many other benefits.
